What is your food philosophy?

“Let food by Thy medicine was Hippocrates’ wisdom.
What is your food philosophy? How do you think about food beyond the need to satisfy hunger, cravings or just the mere enjoyment of it? It is something of an effort to begin a thoughtful reflection of food and its inextricable purpose of sustaining life. Over the years, I have been challenged in my work with Jason’s Deli and with Rusty Coco, one of Jason’s founding owners, to think more about food than is typical of the average American. When you give a good deal of thought to what you eat, you develop a food philosophy.
By default, we all have a food philosophy. Those who devote more gray matter to the subject are “foodies”. If you are not necessarily “into” food, you may not be labeled, but may fall into one of several derogatory categories like “junk food junkies” or “couch potatos”. To most Americans, food is fuel. Clotaire Rapaille aptly describes the American relationship with food in his book, “The Culture Code“. When our tanks are empty, we look to food to “fill’er up” as fast and convenient as possible. We see food as functional. Our food a basic necessity. It keeps us going. And, more often than not, we’re mindless of what ingredients went into making it so fast and convenient.
We are not, in mass, conscious eaters.
The purpose of this blog is three fold:
- To challenge you to become conscious about the food you consume.
- To challenge you to develop a food philosophy that honors sustainability for your health and the planet.
- To not take the challenge so seriously that we lose the enjoyment and pleasure of eating.
Food is important, but it’s not as important as those with whom you share it, or the community it can create between families and friends.
You with me? It’ll be fun and you’ll never eat alone.
